Job Description

The Connecticut Mirror () is a nonprofit, non-partisan local online journalism success story with huge momentum and ambitious growth goals. We cover public policy, government and politics in Connecticut. Our 29-person full-time staff includes 23 journalists and six business team members.  This visual journalist will be an integral part of our newsroom team of policy, investigative and community engagement reporters. The position will include  a mix of daily photojournalism and work on deeper-dive enterprise or investigative stories, as well as the opportunity for visual-driven projects that are initiated by the photographer. We are a highly collaborative team, which means the journalist who holds this position plays a crucial role in both the newsroom and the work our journalists do in conjunction with the audience and business staff.  As our ambitions as a news organization grow, so too does our need for the highest-quality photojournalism to support that work. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to capture and file news photographs on deadline, execute high-quality photojournalism and nonfiction video, write clear and succinct captions that adhere to AP style, pitch and develop compelling photo stories, produce and edit video when necessary, and collaborate with photo editor and journalists across the newsroom to develop best visuals for stories. We would also prefer someone with a drone license, or willingness to obtain one at CT Mirror’s expense.  Qualifications
  • 2-5 years of experience in daily news photography
  • Proven experience covering live events, broader issues and developing compelling visual stories
  • Advanced digital photography skills
  • Ability to tone, caption, and file images on deadline
  • Basic video production and editing skills
  • Deference for and adherence to NPPA ethics
  • Collaborative and curious approach to your work
  • Reliable transportation and authorization to work in the United States
  • Passion for CT Mirror’s public policy mission and nonprofit ethos.
We do not expect every candidate to be equally skilled in all these areas, and this is not a complete list of all relevant qualifications applicants might bring to the job. Reaching talent across a range of backgrounds and experiences is deeply important to us. This position will be based in our Hartford, Conn., newsroom. We strongly encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply.    Here’s our commitment to the candidate whom we hire:
  • Annual salary of $65,000 - $75,000, depending on experience.
  • Medical and dental benefits, and a 403b retirement savings program with company match.
  • Generous time-off policy that includes 23 days of paid personal time off and 11 paid federal holidays.
  • Professional development and the opportunity to learn from peers at industry conferences.
  • Transparent internal review and feedback process.
  • Cell phone stipend.
You’ll work hard because we’re serious about our mission, but you’ll laugh plenty along the way because we can’t always be serious! Please apply by Monday, March 30, 2026, by . You will need to include a resume and a link to your portfolio. You may also include a cover letter that describes your interest in this role, and any additional pertinent information to advance your candidacy. Questions?
